Following instructions from the Traffic police, a few bollards have been placed on the footpath near Eranhipalam in Kozhikode to prevent the illegal entry of two-wheelers. The action came in the wake of a solo protest staged by Prabhavathi Amma, an elderly woman, against the practice.

Police sources said the action initiated earlier against those who misused the footpath would not be revoked. Several two-wheelers were caught on camera after surveillance was intensified by the police to curb the dangerous practice.

They said a few more bollards would be installed at other points in Kozhikode that were being accessed illegally. Similar barriers had been placed at several locations, but some were removed following complaints from differently abled persons who move around the city in wheelchairs, they added.

Meanwhile, a section of residents and pedestrians sought action against the alleged dumping of waste on the footpath. Some complained that a portion of the footpath had recently been turned into a collection point for non-degradable waste, which should not be permitted.
