BJP questions Tamil Nadu Assembly resolution on MGNREGA-related law

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday (January 23, 2026) questioned the adoption of a resolution in the Tamil Nadu Assembly opposing several provisions of the Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act (VB-G RAM G Act), asking whether a State Assembly has the constitutional authority to do so when the law has been passed by Parliament.

At a press conference, BJP MP and spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said, “If any Bill duly passed by the Parliament of India and to which the Supreme Court has not objected or obstructed anything, does any State Assembly have the constitutional authority to pass a Bill against it?”

“Your Assembly has passed a resolution. Does any district panchayat or municipal corporation have the authority to pass legislation saying they will not follow the State laws? If not, the same logic applies in this case as well. And I would like to ask Rahul Gandhi ji whether the Constitution is in danger if an Act of Parliament is being openly defied by a State Assembly,” he said.

On Friday, the Tamil Nadu Assembly adopted a resolution urging the Union government to ensure that the right to work of people in rural areas is protected in accordance with the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.

Targeting Mr. Gandhi for referring to the Act as “VB GRAM G”, Mr. Trivedi said, “…this reflects the Congress party’s hatred, contempt, and disregard for Lord Rama, and their commitment to the eradication of Sanatana Dharma, a pledge of the Tamil Nadu government.”
