Printu Mahadevan, former State president of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) teachers’ cell State convener, who made a death threat to Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi during a television debate, surrendered before the police on Tuesday evening. The Kunnamkulam Judicial First Class Magistrate later granted him bail.
The Peramangalam police had registered a case against Mr. Mahadevan under Sections 192, 352, and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for instigating unrest and issuing threats.
He reached the Permangalam police station along with BJP leaders for surrendering.
“I am a teacher. I don’t promote violence,” he said while surrendering at the police station.
Mr. Mahadevan, who works as a schoolteacher, sparked outrage after making a provocative remark that “a bullet would be fired at Rahul Gandhi’s chest” while participating in a discussion on the ongoing protests in Ladakh.
The case was filed following a complaint lodged by KPCC secretary C.C. Sreekumar, who alleged that Mr. Mahadevan’s statement was an open attempt to incite violence and spread lawlessness in the country.
Meanwhile, the BJP staged a protest condemning the police action against Mr. Mahadevan, calling it politically motivated.
