Nearly 75 superbike riders zoomed through Bengaluru on Sunday as part of an awareness rally organised to highlight the importance of skin donation in the treatment of burn victims.

The rally was jointly organised by the Tusker Harley Owners Group Bengaluru, Rotary Midtown Bengaluru and Victoria Hospital in association with the State government.

The rally was flagged off from Victoria Hospital and concluded at Vidhana Soudha, drawing attention from commuters and members of the public along the route.

Skin grafts for burn injury cases

Organisers said the initiative was aimed at raising awareness about skin donation, which remains relatively unknown, even as the number of severe burn injury cases needing skin grafts and specialised treatment continues to rise.

Participants from the biking community also signed a pledge supporting skin donation and appealed to the public to consider posthumous donation to help burn survivors undergoing long and difficult treatment.

Addressing the gathering, Smitha Segu, professor and head of the Department of Plastic Surgery in Victoria Hospital, said skin donation could play a critical role in the recovery of patients with extensive burns.

“Skin donation can offer vital support in the treatment and recovery of burn patients, many of whom face a long wait for suitable grafts,” she said.

Organisers said increasing awareness and public participation in skin donation could significantly improve treatment outcomes for burn victims and reduce delays in access to grafts.
