The Bihar government on Thursday (August 13, 2026) announced financial assistance and a government job to a family kin of Bharat Bhushan Tiwari, who was killed in an alleged police encounter on June 17, 2026 at Bilauti village of Bhojpur district in Bihar.

Tiwari, 28, of the Bilauti village, who was said to be engaged in social work in the area, was allegedly killed in a police encounter in the village a day after he was caught on camera threatening local policemen with an illegal firearm in his hand.

The video of the encounter had gone viral on social media and the incident, later, turned into a major controversy as family members, villagers and opposition political leaders made a beeline to Tiwari’s modest house in the village and charged that he was killed in a fake police encounter. His family members too had met Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary in Patna on July 24, 2026, when Mr. Choudhary had assured them for an impartial inquiry into the incident.

Earlier, policeman Akshay Kumar, who allegedly fired first on Tiwari, was suspended, arrested and sent to jail for “not cooperating” with the inquiry and becoming absent and absconding for long. His pistol with which he allegedly fired on Tiwari too was seized. On June 23, 2026, the Bihar police had registered a murder case against five police personnel under section 103(1) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, who have already been suspended in the case, said a police official at the police headquarter in Patna, preferring anonymity.

The Bihar government, after a State cabinet meeting on June 24, 2026, had ordered a judicial probe into the incident which, sources close to the government told The Hindu, has submitted its interim report to the government.

“On the basis of the interim report of the judicial inquiry, the Bihar government will provide financial assistance to the family and a government job to a member of Bharat Bhushan Tiwari’s family”, CM Choudhary said in a post on social media on Thursday (August 13, 2026).

Earlier, while meeting with the family members of Tiwari, the CM in a post on social media had asserted that the “government is strongly standing with the aggrieved family and it (the government) will take all necessary steps to provide justice to the family”.

Earlier on June 25, 2026, Justice (retd.) Vinod Kumar Sinha, who was heading the judicial commission to probe the killing, had met the family members of the deceased youth and noted down their statements. The judicial commission is said to have submitted its interim report to the Bihar government. “It’s an interim report, not the final report and it cannot be made public”, a senior official close to the Secretariat told The Hindu.
