The Parappana Agrahara police in Bengaluru have arrested a woman and seized gold and silver jewellery worth ₹7.5 lakh in connection with the theft of ornaments from a bus passenger travelling from Bengaluru to Tiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu.

According to the police, the accused was traced and arrested in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh on December 12, following an investigation based on a complaint by a Koramangala resident. During the arrest, officers recovered around 70 grams of gold and 22 grams of silver jewellery from her.

The complaint, lodged on November 24, stated that the incident occurred a day earlier when the complainant boarded a bus from the Madiwala bus stand with gold and silver ornaments in her handbag. “While the bus was en route to Tiruvannamalai, a woman passenger allegedly dropped some coins on the floor. When the complainant bent down to pick them up, the woman was suspected to have taken advantage of the distraction to steal jewellery from the victim’s bag,” an official said.

The complainant later realised that about 80 grams of gold and 22 grams of silver were missing and approached the police.

Based on the complaint, the police launched an investigation, tracked the suspect, and arrested her. The accused has since been released on bail, the police said, adding that further investigation is under way.
