The Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) is drafting a new set of rules for solid waste management, including standard operating procedure guidelines to streamline and monitor the process.

The new guidelines will demand large commercial establishments and bulk waste generators to process their own waste instead of leaving it to the urban local body. Bulk generators will be defined as those who operate on 20,000 square feet or more, like hotels, malls, banquet halls, commercial complexes, and units generating over 100 kilograms of waste per day, or more.

At present, such waste is collected and processed by the BCC for a service fee. In future, the BCC will encourage self-processing of waste by bulk generators, and will monitor the same.

The new rules will force adoption of methods such as composting, biogas generation and conversion of wet waste into organic manure. It will segregate waste into various categories like wet waste, dry waste, sanitary waste and special waste. Sanitary waste will include disposable material like diapers and sanitary napkins, and medical waste. Special waste includes e-waste, hazardous materials, chemical residue, and other specified materials.
