One of the key accused in the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl in West Bengal’s Baruipur was killed in an encounter on Wednesday (July 8, 2026), police said.

As per police, the accused was killed in an encounter early on Wednesday (July 8, 2026) after he tried to “escape from police custody” during a crime scene reconstruction exercise.

The accused was taken to Suryapur in Baruipur on Tuesday (July 7, 2026) night for reconstruction of the crime, a senior officer said.

On Sunday (July 5, 2026), the mutilated body of a 12-year-old minor girl in South 24 Parganas’s Baruipur was recovered from a pond, with her family members alleging she was raped and murdered. The incident sparked a protest in the area as the angry mob beat a 40-year-old man to death, suspecting he was an associate of the accused.

A six-member Special Investigation Team along with the Baruipur district police had on Monday (July 6, 2026) arrested three of the four suspects named in the FIR, including the prime accused in the case, Ananda Sardar, following overnight search operations and interrogation of three others who were detained.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had also assured the family members of the victim that his government would ensure capital punishment was accorded to all the accused persons responsible for the heinous crime.
