A Bangladeshi student activist, wanted in his country for killing a Hindu police officer last year was apprehended at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi while attempting to flee to a European country, official sources said on Thursday (February 19, 2026).

Government officials identified the man as Ahmed Raza Hasan Mehdi, who was intercepted by immigration authorities while he was attempting to board a flight to a European destination, the source said.

Mehdi, a resident of Habiganj in Bangladesh, is facing charges in connection with the murder of Sub-Inspector Santosh Chowdhury on August 5, 2024, during a nationwide movement that led to regime change in Bangladesh.

The accused allegedly killed the SI during an attack on the police station. The officer’s body was later found hanging from a tree. A video went viral during the uprising which caused a major uproar in both Bangladesh and India.

Following his detention, the activist was placed under custody and subsequently deported to Bangladesh, the source added.
