Health Minister Veena George on Saturday (February 7, 2026) opened an awareness session on Nipah infection at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode.

The event was organised by the Kerala One Health Centre for Nipah Research as part of efforts to strengthen surveillance against the infection.

Ms. George claimed that Kerala had developed its own model for Nipah treatment. Such awareness sessions are being held to help people remain alert against the possibility of infection. Conducting scientific and systematic activities ensuring people’s involvement, streamlining the work of various government departments, and making international studies on Nipah available for reference are among the steps being taken. Ms. George also unveiled a Nipah digital library and awareness poster.

T.S. Anish, Nodal Officer, Kerala One Health Centre for Nipah Research, and A. Naveen, State head, Kerala Centre for Disease Control, led the awareness session. The surveillance steps to be taken by various government departments were discussed. Thottathil Raveendran, MLA, presided over the event in which senior health officials were present.
