A 24-year-old autorickshaw driver from R.T. Nagar, who was caught by residents while allegedly attempting to steal from a house in Chokkanahalli, has filed a complaint claiming he was assaulted. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.

According to police, the complainant, Azhar Khan, confessed that he, along with two of his associates, used to move around residential areas to commit theft. In his complaint, Azhar stated that his income was insufficient to meet household expenses and admitted to consuming alcohol.

Police said Azhar Khan was acquainted with Razaq and his friend Shyam. Preliminary investigation revealed that the trio allegedly moved around residential areas and committed petty thefts, stealing small electrical items and other valuables from houses and selling them for money.

The incident took place on January 31, 2026, at around 9.30 p.m., when Ahzar Khan, along with Razaq and Shyam, arrived in an autorickshaw near Chokkanahalli Main Road, close to a residential apartment. Ahzar allegedly entered the compound of a house opposite the apartment and attempted to steal electrical items.

However, a couple from the house noticed, confronted him and questioned his presence, accusing him of theft. As the argument escalated, Razaq and Shyam, who were waiting outside in the autorickshaw, rushed to help him.

A scuffle ensued, during which the trio allegedly assaulted the couple. Razaq reportedly picked up a beer bottle and struck the man on the head, causing bleeding injuries. The woman also sustained injuries in the melee. The injured collapsed on the spot, following which residents gathered at the scene. Taking advantage of the situation, Razaq and Shyam fled in the autorickshaw, leaving Ahzar Khan behind. Azhar Khan was later allegedly assaulted by members of the public and sustained bleeding injuries to his head. He was shifted to a hospital for treatment.

Based on the complaint and preliminary inquiry, the Sampigehalli Police have registered a case for attempted theft and an assault case, and efforts are underway to trace and secure the absconding accused, said the police.
