At least 15 people were killed and several others feared trapped after a private bus was struck by boulders and debris following a major landslip in the Bhalughat area of Jhanduta sub-division in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday (October 7, 2025), officials said.

The casualties could rise as rescue operations were still under way, officials added.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said the bus was trapped under a sudden massive landslip on Tuesday evening (October 7, 2025). “The incident occurred at around 6:30 p.m., close to Bhallu bridge near Bhalughat area. The bus was reportedly carrying around 30 passengers when it was hit by boulders and muck that fell from the hill. The bus was on its way from Marotan to Ghumarwin,” he said.

Three children were rescued alive and were being treated at a hospital in Barthin village, officials said. Intermittent rains have been lashing the region since October 6, 2025.

District administration teams rushed to the site to carry out rescue operations. Authorities were directed to deploy all available machinery for relief efforts.

Mr. Sukhu, who is monitoring the situation from the State capital, Shimla, directed the local administration to expedite relief and rescue operations. He instructed that the injured be taken to hospitals without delay and assured that complete arrangements would be made for their treatment and care.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives in the landslip. He announced an ex-gratia relief of ₹1 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased and ₹50,000 for those injured.

“Saddened by the loss of lives due to a mishap in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh. My thoughts are with the affected people and their families during this difficult time. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured,” a PMO statement said.
