Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank expresses interest in expanding strategic investment partnership with Kerala, says CMO

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has proposed strengthening the bank’s development partnership with Kerala and building a strategic investment partnership aligned with the State’s development priorities, including blue economy initiatives, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan’s office has said.

An AIIB delegation comprising Senior Investment Officer Rajesh Yadav, Investment officer Mohammed Sharib Khan and Associate Investment Officer Vanshica Kant held discussions with Mr. Satheesan on Monday (July 27, 2026) on strengthening the bank’s development partnership with the State through investments in sustainable infrastructure and other priority sectors, according to a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) on Wednesday.

The AIIB has indicated its willingness to work with the government in exploring investments in blue economy projects through an integrated programme approach, the statement said. The delegation discussed the United Democratic Front government’s concept of Mission Samudra as a comprehensive blue economy initiative integrating multiple sectors. The discussions also covered strengthening Kerala’s water security through investments in irrigation, integrated water resource management, dam safety, flood resilience and the Kuttanad-Vembanad ecosystem.

Further, opportunities for cooperation in urban infrastructure, transport connectivity, knowledge and research infrastructure, health and life sciences, renewable energy and State highway development were also discussed, according to the Chief Minister’s Office.

Mr. Satheesan said his government looked forward to strengthening its partnership with the AIIB for implementing high-impact infrastructure projects. The Chief Minister said that all future proposals would be taken forward in accordance with the State’s development priorities and the procedures prescribed by the Centre.

Ongoing projects

The AIIB delegation noted that ongoing projects with AIIB involvement such as the Kochi Metro Phase II (Pink Line), the Kerala Solid Waste Management Project, the Resilient Kerala Programme and the Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP-II) have laid a strong foundation for expanding cooperation in new sectors, according to the CMO.

Further, the AIIB team noted that Kerala’s emphasis on green infrastructure, climate resilience, connectivity, technology-enabled development and private capital mobilisation closely aligns with the Bank’s Strategy 2030. “The State’s priorities in infrastructure development, urban transformation, water security, health, education, transport and energy were identified as areas offering significant scope for future collaboration,” the statement said.
