Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) observed black day across the State on Thursday to protest against the police action against them during a march and dharna led by ASHAs to Cliff House, the Chief Minister’s official residence, on Wednesday.

The Statewide protest was inaugurated by Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan at the Secretariat gate.

Protest demonstrations and meetings were organised in many places under the banner of Kerala ASHA Health Workers Association (KAHWA), with ASHAs wearing black.

The KAHWA said that their peaceful protest in front of the Cliff House had turned into a melee following the police intervention. It said that the government was deliberately turning a deaf ear to the pleas of ASHAs, whose agitation demanding enhanced remuneration, retirement benefits and pension had crossed over eight months.

It said that ASHAs would not be intimidated by the police action and that the government’s attempts to silence the fight launched by women workers demanding fair wages would not succeed.
