The Archdiocesan Movement for Transparency (AMT) has said it is unwilling to accept the ‘immature’ announcements that were made in the wake of the 34th Synod meeting of the Syro Malabar Church.
The AMT, which is opposed to the Synod’s unified mass liturgy in the Ernakulam Angamaly Archdiocese, has termed the appointment of a third Auxiliary Bishop in the Kottayam Archdiocese as a violation of norms that were hitherto being adhered to. It is rather unheard of for an archdiocese ‘having less than two lakh members’ to have four bishops, including three auxiliary bishops, who would together have four votes. This is in contrast with the Ernakulam Angamaly Archdiocese that has ‘six lakh members’ not having even a single auxiliary bishop, said Riju Kanjookaran, spokesperson of the AMT in a release.
In this situation, the Synod must explain why the Kottayam Archdiocese alone has four bishops, unlike other archdioceses. A meeting of devotees and priests of the Ernakulam Angamaly Archdiocese on Friday (August 28, 2026) would decide on the future course of action, he added.
