IPS Anurag Kumar has been appointed as the new Delhi Police Commissioner, replacing Satish Golcha for the top post of the capital’s police force.
According to an order issued by the Union Home Ministry on June 17, 2026, the 1994-batch officer will assume charge as the new chief of the police force.
“With the approval of the Competent Authority, Anurag Kumar, IPS, is hereby appointed as Commissioner of Police, Delhi, with effect from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders,” the Ministry of Home Affairs said in an official order.
Who is Anurag Kumar? Career timeline
1994: Mr Kumar joined the Indian Police Service as a Direct Recruit after clearing the UPSC exam. In the same year, he was allotted to the joint cadre of Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, and Union Territories, acronymed as the joint AGMUT cadre.
1994-2010: Mr. Kumar served on the ground in Delhi, rising to the post of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP).
2010: Mr. Kumar was conferred the Police Medal for Meritorious Service (PMMS) in recognition of his work under the AGMUT.
2014: Mr. Kumar was empanelled by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet to formally hold administrative ranks up to Inspector General (IG) and equivalent levels.
2016: Mr. Kumar was decorated with the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service(PPMDS) for his contribution to domestic security operations.
2018: Mr.Kumar worked as part of a Central Deputation tenure after being relieved from Union Territory assignments
2025: Mr. Kumar was empanelled by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) to hold Director General (DG) or DG-equivalent commands in the Centre.
2026: He was formally appointed as the Commissioner of Delhi Police.
What next for Satish Golcha?
Satish Golcha has been directed to report to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, for his next appointment. His departure from the Delhi Police Commissioner post comes ahead of schedule. He had been serving as the chief since August 2025.
