AI-guided OCT procedure saves life of heart patient in Narasaraopet

Doctors at Sri Datta Hospital in Narasaraopet have successfully treated a critically ill 60-year-old woman using an advanced AI-guided Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) system, marking a significant development in cardiac procedure in the region.

According to the hospital, the patient was initially admitted to a local hospital with complaints of severe breathlessness and excessive sweating. With her oxygen saturation level dropping to a critical 60%, she was shifted to Sri Datta Hospital. Cardiologist Dr. Krishnakanth Garlapati put her on ventilator support and conducted diagnostic tests, which revealed reduced blood flow to the heart.

After stabilising her condition, doctors performed an angiogram that detected an 80% blockage in the right coronary artery. The medical team then carried out an OCT-guided implantation of a bio-resorbable scaffold (BRS), a next-generation stent that gradually dissolves within two to three years, leaving the blood vessel largely free of permanent metallic residue.

Dr. Krishnakanth said the AI-based OCT system enabled highly precise imaging of the artery, helping doctors identify and correct improperly expanded stent struts that could have caused future complications.
