Incessant rains have provided much-needed relief for farmers of Vizianagaram district, which had witnessed a dry spell in June 2026. The agricultural activity has been brisk in all mandals of the district with the occurrence of decent rainfall for the last few days. Many mandals, such as Vizianagaram, Gantyada, Gajapathinagaram, Denkada, Bhogapuram and others received more than 30 mm rainfall in the last few days.

Initially, the agriculture department feared that crop area would be reduced by around 20,000 hectares in the on-going Kharif season with the impact of EL Nino. Normally, the paddy was grown in 1.21 lakh hectares every year and its crop area projection was estimated to be around 1.03 lakh hectares. Maize projected crop area is around 10,200 hectares this year. It is almost the same as maize does not require huge quantities of water like paddy crops.

Speaking to The Hindu, Vizianagaram District Agriculture Officer V.T.Ramarao expressed happiness over the improvement of rainfall throughout the district. He said that the crop area was expected to be more than the previous projection due to the significant rainfall in several mandals of the district. He said that the government had taken adequate steps for the supply of sufficient quantities of fertilisers in all areas of the district.

With the incessant rains in catchment areas, several reservoirs such as Thotapalli, Madduvalasa, Thatipudi and others have been receiving huge waters in the last few days. Recently, the irrigation department released water from Thatipudi reservoir for the irrigation of nearly 15,300 acres of lands located in S.Kota and Gajapathinagaram constituencies.
