Members of the Gulbarga Bar Association district and High Court units staged a protest here on Wednesday demanding stern action against advocate Rakesh Kishore for making an attempt to “throw a shoe” at Chief Justice B.R. Gavai during Supreme Court proceedings on Monday.
Advocates from the District Court and the High Court of Karnataka here tied red ribbons on their arms and staged a demonstration outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office before submitting a memorandum addressed to the President.
Protestors led by Bar Association district president S.V. Pasar termed it an “unprecedented and shameful” act that breaches the dignity of the judiciary and the rule of law.
The Chief Justice of India represents an institution and perhaps, the largest judiciary in the world. Any disrespect shown to him will be disrespect to the whole institution, they said.
They said that the incident has brought shame to the legal fraternity and undermined the dignity of the judiciary. They stressed that stern action should be taken against the accused lawyer so that such incidents do not recur in the future.
The Bar Association members urged the President to order for initiating criminal proceedings against Rakesh Kishore for attempting to assault the Chief Justice of India and for disrupting court proceedings.
They also sought a thorough investigation into the incident to determine if there were any larger conspiracies or motivations behind Rakesh Kishore’s action.
Bar Association vice-president Bheemashankar Pujari, general secretary Siddaram B. Wadi, vice-president (women’s wing) Arati Rathod, Bar Association (High Court unit) vice-president Ananth Jahagirdar, general secretary Gourish Khashampur, joint secretary Rekha Patil and others were present.
