Members of the Praja Arogya Vedika (PAV) from the NTR district have expressed concern over the diarrhoea outbreak in New Rajarajeswaripeta of Vijayawada, where more than 40 people have taken ill in the past 48 hours.

In a statement, PAV general secretary, NTR district, G. Vijay Prakash said this is the second time in 16 months that the city has reported a diarrhoea outbreak.

The last outbreak in the city was reported in May last year. Despite Vijayawada being a recipient of Swachh Bharat awards and part of the capital region, it is sad that the municipal corporation has failed to provide clean drinking water to the people, Mr. Vijay Prakash said.

In addition to providing the necessary medical services to all persons hospitalised with symptoms of diarrhoea, strong measures should be taken to prevent recurrence of such outbreaks in the city, Mr. Vijay Prakash said, adding that all outdated pipelines should be replaced with the new ones. Necessary inspections should be carried out immediately throughout the city, he demanded.
