Public Works Minister Aadhav Arjuna said on Sunday (November 1, 2026) that Tamil Nadu should have its own flag, along the lines of those of other States, with the Tamil language given prominence.

Addressing a meeting organised to honour Tamil scholars on the occasion of Tamil Nadu Day, he said a law should be enacted to provide for the flag, and Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay should hoist it on November 1 and July 18.

“It should be hoisted at every house. We are in a position to create a flag with a status equal to that of the national flag to proclaim the greatness of Tamils and the Tamil language,” he said.

The Minister said a message about the importance of the Tamil language should reach children in the State, as schools were promoting the idea that only English could provide employment opportunities. “We should change this perception. We should also change the attitude of taking pride in speaking English. In China, people speak Chinese, and in France, they speak French. They are not giving up their mother tongue,” he said.

Reiterating the advocacy of the two-language policy, Mr. Arjuna said English was a language of business and was necessary for commerce and trade. “A child born in Tamil Nadu should learn Tamil. Children of MLAs and Ministers should study in the Tamil medium, and the children of all IAS and IPS officers should also opt for the Tamil medium,” he added.
