Andhra Pradesh (A.P.) emerged as the No. 1 State in implementing the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC), which is a critical national mandate to reduce energy consumption in new commercial buildings.

With approvals for 786 ECBC — compliant buildings, A.P. surpassed Telangana (738), Punjab (552), Uttar Pradesh (201), Haryana (100), Kerala (57) and Uttarakhand (12), according to an official release.

This achievement marks significant progress in reducing energy waste, lowering carbon emissions, and generating economic benefits for both citizens and the government.

The AP State Energy Conservation Mission (APSECM), Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and the Municipal Administration & Urban Development (MA & UD) have played a key role in mainstreaming energy efficiency across the urban ecosystem.

It was stated that A.P. had set a national benchmark in 2014 when it became the first state to deploy energy-efficient LED street lighting in Visakhapatnam, with the support of the Union Government and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL).

That initiative was soon scaled up across the country, leading to massive energy savings and global recognition, contributing to the hosting of BRICS Summit.

S. Suresh Kumar, Principal Secretary, MA&UD, said the State is now designing a future — ready roadmap focusing on global standards:

He noted that the government was studying best-in-class technologies and sustainable infrastructure practices across sectors including urban transport to ensure that AP remains a frontrunner in energy-efficient urban development.

Commissioner & Director of Municipal Administration P. Sampat Kumar said sustained efforts were being made to provide cost-effective services in Urban Local Bodies through energy efficiency, which helps in generating economic benefit to the people and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
