A dream come true for student-teacher team from Kashmir

Maryam Akbar from Kashmir was in her teens when she came across a photograph of a Sadhya (an elaborate meal) spread on a banana leaf and an article on it in a magazine. Since then, she had dreamt of tasting it. Thirty years later, her dream was fulfilled when she visited Kozhikode as part of an exposure tour.

A senior lecturer at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS), Kothibagh, Srinagar, Ms. Akbar, along with her colleagues Humaira Shah and Sheikh Zahoor, besides the 10 students who accompanied them, had a sumptuous Sadhya at a restaurant at Kozhikode beach on Tuesday.

The 13-member team is in Kozhikode to study the PRISM model transformation at Government Vocational Higher Secondary School (GVHSS) for Girls at Nadakkavu. The Faisal and Shabana Foundation, which had contributed ₹16 crore in 2012 to the infrastructural development of GVHSS, Nadakkavu, has adopted GHSS, Kothibagh, for a ₹20-crore development project under the ‘Dream School’ project. The first phase of the project will kick off on October 27, before which the team came down to Kozhikode where it all started.

It was Roshan John, the project coordinator of the foundation, who helped Ms. Akbar realise her dream. Besides the Sadhya, the team was served traditional dishes including Appam, Fish-mango curry, and dishes specific to Kuttichira and Thalassery. The team visited a few other schools in the district that have been developed under the PRISM project, besides tourist locales like the bird sanctuary at Kadalundi.
