P. Govinda Pillai national award for T.M. Krishna

Carnatic musician and singer T.M. Krishna has been selected for the fifth national award instituted in the name of veteran Communist P. Govinda Pillai.

The award, which comprises a purse of ₹3 lakh, statuette, and a citation, will be given away at AKG auditorium here on the 13th death anniversary of P. Govinda Pillai on November 22.

Mr. Krishna has been selected for the award for being a prominent figure in the contemporary Carnatic music scene and his interventions in the socio-cultural spheres, the PG Samskrithi Kendram said in a press statement.

A jury chaired by CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby and comprising musician Sreevalsan J. Menon, danseuse Rajashree Warrier, and PG Samskrithi Kendram secretary R. Parvathy Devi adjudged the winner.

The previous winners of the award include lawyer and social activist Prashant Bhushan; journalist and The Hindu Group Publishing Pvt. Ltd. Director N. Ram; writer Arundhati Roy; and historian Romila Thapar.
