Minister for Public Works P.A. Mohamed Riyas has said that the widened national highway from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram will be opened by 2026 January.

Opening a seminar titled ‘Vision 2031’ here on Saturday, he said it would be a “New Year gift” to the people of the State. Mr. Riyas said ₹5,580 crore had been spent for the development of the national highway. The Public Works department had been taking steps to convert Kerala as a “hub of infrastructure development” by 2031, and all roads would be upgraded by then.

State highways would be developed as four-lane designed roads and district roads as two-lane designed roads. Elevated highways would be constructed in cities with high traffic density. A road network map would be developed linking all important tourism destinations in the State, in accordance with the design policy. Smart roads would be developed in all major cities, Mr. Riyas said.

An outer ring road in Thiruvananthapuram, bypass road in Ernakulam, Kollam-Sengottai greenfield road, and Kozhikode-Palakkad greenfield road were some of the projects being given high priority. Along with this, the development of the Thrissur-Edappally national highway as a six-lane road, upgrading of National Highway 766 connecting Kozhikode and Muthanga in Wayanad, and modification of Adimali-Kumily and Mundakayam-Kumily roads too would be taken up, Mr. Riyas added. Thottathil Raveendran, MLA, among others, was present.
