A human skeleton found on the terrace of a two-storey building at Cherani, Manjeri, in Malappuram, Kerala, has sparked widespread speculation. The police have launched an investigation after two workers, searching for a discarded flex board on the terrace, stumbled upon the human remains on Tuesday night.

Preliminary investigation conducted by police surgeon Shaikh Zakir Husain and his team revealed that the bones were those of a man, and that they were nearly two months old. But the person’s identity is yet to be established.

The police said further details would emerge only after a thorough forensic examination. The skeleton gas been moved to Government Medical College, Manjeri, for forensic analysis.

The skeleton was found scattered around a pile of debris dumped on the terrace of the building on Plywood Road belonging to a person from Mongam.

The skeletal torso was found alongside a banyan, a briefcase and an overcoat. Nearby lay a mat, pillow, dhoti, lungi and a cigarette lighter.

Currently, some workers from Tamil Nadu are staying in the building. Earlier, migrant workers from other States had lived there. The police have begun questioning the Tamil workers and investigating the previous occupants.

The police said they were exploring several angles, including the possibility of murder. However, they said it was too early to determine whether the man died in his sleep or was killed.

The police raised doubts that the body had produced no odour and had gone unnoticed for two months. The police said that there were no missing-person complaints from the area in recent months.
