A 3.5-year-old girl who suffered serious injuries following a stray dog attack at Neendur near North Paravur in Ernakulam on Sunday is recovering post surgery to reattach the severed portion of her ear.

The girl, who was playing with her sister and cousin, was attacked by a stray dog on Sunday evening. According to eyewitnesses, the dog knocked the girl over and bit off a portion of the ear. She was rushed to a nearby government hospital where she was given the anti-rabies shot. From there, she was shifted to the Government Medical College Hospital at Kalamassery and then to another private hospital.

“The doctors here referred us to another private hospital as they could not carry out the surgery to reattach the portion of the ear,” said a friend of the child’s father. She was shifted to a private hospital in the city at night where she is presently undergoing treatment.

A surgery to reattach the severed part of the ear was conducted early morning on Monday. The child, who was kept under observation, has been shifted to the ward.

The child was attacked in the vicinity of her father and his friends, who were playing in the ground next to the Ramankulangara temple at Neendur. “But none of us could intervene in time to save her. The dog rushed in from somewhere and bit her ear. A portion of the ear was bitten off,” said a relative of the child’s father.

Talking to reporters, residents of the Neendoor area alleged that despite their frequent complaints about street dogs, no action has been taken.
