Four migrant workers sustained burns in an explosion reportedly following cooking gas cylinder leak at their rented quarters near Pudiyangadi harbour in Kannur, Kerala, on Friday morning. Two of them are reported to be in critical condition.

The fire broke out around 6.30 a.m. while the workers, employed in fishing, were preparing food.

According to the police, gas had leaked overnight after the stove was left on following dinner. The explosion took place when one of the workers lit a lighter in the morning.

All four injured – identified as Shiva Bahra, Nigham Bahra, Subhash Bahra and Jitendra Bahra, all natives of Odisha – were rushed to the Kannur Government Medical College Hospital, Periyaram, where two are now undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit.

Fire and Rescue Services personnel reached the spot and brought the blaze under control.

The police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident.
