The Kerala Government Medical Officers Association (KGMOA) staged protests across Kannur district on Thursday condemning the attack on a doctor at the Thamarassery taluk hospital and demanding that the government ensure the safety of health workers.

Doctors staged dharnas at all health institutions and abstained from all duties except those directly involving patient care, including outpatient services.

In a statement, KGMO district president Dr. Jithin V.S. urged the government to implement the hospital safety audit measures announced after the murder of Dr. Vandana Das and to operationalise police aid posts and CCTV surveillance in hospitals providing emergency services.

The association also demanded the appointment of at least two doctors per shift in emergency departments to reduce workload and prevent disputes.

Warning of intensified protests if government failed to act, KGMOA leaders reiterated that ensuring the safety of doctors and health workers was the government’s responsibility.
