The night flight-landing facility at the Shivamogga Airport will be operational within three to four months, S.G. Nanjaiah Math, Chairperson of Karnataka State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSIIDC), said on Wednesday.

After visiting the airport in Shivamogga, Mr. Nanjaiah Math told reporters that the tender process for pending civil works and installation of equipment required for the night-landing facility had been finalised. The works were in progress, and they would be completed soon, he added.

The KSIIDC, the chairperson said, plans to utilise 111 acres of the total 780 acres acquired for the airport project for hotels, malls, and other commercial establishments. The corporation will handover the land to private players on a lease of 30 years and these facilities would benefit the passengers, he stated.

Since the airport was inaugurated, the number of passengers utilising the services had been increasing, Mr. Nanjaiah Math said. In the first year, 17,000 people utilised the services, while in the second year, the number increased to 92,000; in the current year, 1.1 lakh people have utilised the facility so far, he added. “At present, the airport has flights to Bengaluru, Goa, Chennai, Tirupati, and Hyderabad. Gradually, flights to other cities will also be introduced,” he said.

Regarding the delay in allotting sites to people who gave up their land for the airport project, Mr. Nanjaiah Math said he would discuss the issue with the officers concerned.

The Shivamogga Airport was inaugurated in 2023. Residents of Sogane and neighbouring villages, who parted with their land for the project, have decided to stage a protest on Thursday, opposing the delay in sanctioning sites to them as assured by the government.
