A 24-year-old youth was arrested by Katpadi police for stealing cars near a railway station for the past few months.

The arrested person was identified as Stephen Raj, a resident of Vellore. The police said that Raj had given an advertisement on social media seeking temporary drivers. Siva, a driver and the victim, had applied for the job.

Raj told Siva that he should hire a cab to drop him in Coimbatore and gave ₹20,000 for hiring the vehicle.

However, he told Siva to leave the vehicle at the parking lot with the keys. Siva did as he was told but when he returned to the parking lot, he found the car missing.

On being informed, Katpadi police registered a case. Special teams analysed CCTV camera footage and nabbed Stephen Raj from his hideout in Vellore. The police also recovered two cars from him. A probe is under way.
