The ruling National Conference (NC) on Monday (October 6, 2025) said the Congress reached out to the party to finalise a seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls in Jammu and Kashmir.
“The Congress has reached out to our leadership. There are discussions at that level. We respect the fact that there is an alliance in place,” NC leader and MLA Tanvir Sadiq said. He was, however, quick to add that the NC made sacrifices for the alliance during the 2024 Assembly elections.
“The names of the candidates will be announced soon,” Mr. Sadiq said.
The NC and the Congress fought the 2024 Assembly elections together. However, the Congress refused to accept any ministerial berth in Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s government, stating, “it won’t join the government till the Statehood of J&K is restored.”
The Union Territory of J&K has only nine ministerial portfolios as per the J&K Reorganisation Act, 2019. Mr. Abdullah’s government has distributed these portfolios among the six party leaders. However, three ministerial berths remain vacant since the government took office in October last year.
Meanwhile, Mr. Sadiq said the party aims to field candidates from J&K. “There will be no other candidate from outside,” he added.
J&K’s Assembly has 90 seats, with the NC holding around 50 members, including independents. The BJP has 28 members and is confident of winning at least one seat.
