A day after the Telangana State Waqf Board issued proceedings and allotted a 2,500 square yard land parcel for a graveyard, the move hit a hurdle on Sunday (October 5, 2025) with defence officials raising concerns over the matter.

Minister in-charge of Hyderabad Ponnam Prabhakar, Minister for Minorities Welfare Adluri Laxman, and TGWB Chairman Syed Azmatullah Husseni at a meeting in the Jubilee Hills Assembly constituency, which is scheduled to go for bypolls, had announced to the public on Sunday the earmarking of waqf land for the graveyards, a long-standing demand of locals. However, Defence officials later in the day raised certain objections.

Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Husseni said that the land parcel is a waqf in nature and it was based on the gazette notification, which was earmarked for the purpose of a graveyard. “They saw activity there [at the land parcel] and came to check what was happening. Since it is close to the Army area, they had come over. It is a process. Our staff have handed over copies certain documents to the defence people which shows that the land is waqf. Our staff is going to meet the concerned Army officials tomorrow to discuss the issue,” he said, adding that the board and the government acted in accordance with documents in their possession.
