Aspirants of special education teacher posts, backed by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), on Wednesday staged a protest at Vidya Bhavan demanding immediate recruitment to 2,260 special education teacher posts sanctioned under G.O. No. 13.

The protesters sought a Special DSC notification to fill 1,136 SGT (Special Education) and 1,124 School Assistant (Special Education) posts through direct recruitment. The federation’s State secretary G. Ramanna said the posts had received Cabinet approval following Supreme Court directions, but were still kept vacant.

Police stopped the protesters from entering the Vidya Bhavan premises and erected barricades, prompting them to stage a sit-in on the road. A delegation was later allowed to submit a representation to Education Department Joint Director A. Subba Reddy.

Mr. Ramanna said six Special Teacher Eligibility Tests (TETs) examinations had been conducted since 2022, but the government had not issued a single Special DSC notification. Thousands of candidates who had completed special education courses were waiting for recruitment after spending heavily on training and coaching, he said. He also questioned the government’s reported claim that the 2,260 posts had already been filled, demanding details of when and where the appointments were made.

Citing the need for specialised support for children with disabilities, Mr. Ramanna said the State had around 82,000 children with disabilities and urged the government to address the shortage of special educators and enforce the 1:10 teacher-student ratio.

He said the organisation would intensify the agitation if the government failed to announce its decision within two days. The protesters also demanded that Education Minister Nara Lokesh make a clear statement on the proposed Special DSC. The protesters warned that they would escalate the agitation and would lay siege to the Minister’s residence, if the government failed to act.
