Raebareli police on Sunday (October 5, 2025) suspended three police personnel, including a sub-inspector, after a Dalit youth was beaten to death on suspicion of theft in the Unchahar police station limits on Wednesday (October 1, 2025). The Station House Officer (SHO), Sanjay Kumar, was also removed from his post and attached to the crime branch.

Uproar erupted after a 38-year-old Dalit man named Hariom was beaten to death amid rumours of being a thief. Five people have been arrested in the matter, three police personnel, including one Sub-inspector, have been suspended, fixing accountability over the unfortunate incident. The accused includes people from Dalit/Backwards and different castes; hence, it’s a request to not spread caste rumour, please cooperate with the police in maintaining law and order,” said the Raebareli police in a statement.

In the viral video of the incident, a group of men could be seen beating the victim, who can be feebly heard saying some words, including “Rahul Gandhi”. The accused continued beating him, saying in Hindi that “everyone here is with Baba”.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and local MP Rahul Gandhi spoke with the family of the deceased, assuring them help and support.

“Leader of Opposition Shri Rahul Gandhi ji today spoke on phone to the father and brother of the youth killed in this inhuman massacre in Rae Bareli and listened to their pain and consoled them. He assured the family that Congress would stand rock solid behind them in their fight against this injustice. Such cruelty and oppression against the Dalit community will not be tolerated at any cost. “Baba’s people” should listen carefully,” said the Uttar Pradesh Congress in a statement.
