Murshidabad district’s Sagardighi constituency MLA Bayron Biswas suffered burn injuries after a fire broke out at his home in Samserganj on Saturday (October 3, 2026).

He was initially admitted to a local nursing home, and may be transferred to the Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital for better treatment. The family members have also said that he may be transferred to a hospital in Kolkata if the need arises.

According to local sources, Mr Biswas is currently in a stable condition and is undergoing treatment and has sustained around 30% burns. Reportedly. His wife also sustained injuries in the fire while she was attempting to rescue him.

Firefighters rushed to the spot and attempted to douse the fire. However, the cause of the fire has not yet been determined by the officials. The fire had broken out at around 11 a.m., according to the locals present in the area.

Bishnupada Roy, Officer-in-Charge of the Dhuliyan Fire Station, stated on Saturday (October 3, 2026) afternoon, “Three fire tenders brought the blaze under control within an hour. The cause of the fire is not yet clear.”

Mr Biswas is one of the MLAs in the Democratic Trinamool Congress who defected from the Mamata Banerjee faction after the 2026 Assembly elections and set up their own camp under Ritabrata Banerjee’s leadership. He had won from the Sagardighi seat on a Congress ticket in a 2023 bypoll, but later shifted to Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari wished him a speedy recovery. “I have heard about it and will get details of the matter,” Mr Adhikari told reporters.

“Deeply disturbed & pained with the news of my friend and colleague Bayron Biswas. Wishing for his speedy recovery. Get well soon Brother,” Mr. Ritabrata Banerjee reacted to the accident and wrote on social media.

Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that Mr Biswas was like his brother, even if they are in different political parties, and wished for his speedy recovery.

“This needs to be investigated because the fire occurred against the backdrop of his colourful political career,” West Bengal Congress president Subhankar Sarkar said.
