A large group of armed miscreants attacked and set fire to some 100 houses in a disputed sector of the Assam-Nagaland border on Thursday (October 2, 2025) night.
Officials in eastern Assam’s Golaghat district said the miscreants, allegedly from Nagaland, fired guns and hurled grenades before setting fire to the houses mostly belonging to migrant Muslims. The incident happened around 11.45 p.m. in the B Sector of the inter-State border.
Affected villagers said the miscreants set fire to their homes after dragging them out. The panic-stricken people fled to safer areas as the assailants fired in the air, one of the villagers said.
“I strongly condemn the attack by Naga miscreants on the Assam-Nagaland border and have requested the Chief Minister to take the strictest possible action,” Sarupathar MLA Biswajit Phukan posted on X.
Senior officials, including the district’s Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajen Singh, visited the area to assess the situation. Personnel of the 155th Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been stationed in the area.
Assam and Nagaland have had a long-standing border dispute since the 1960s. Conflicts along the border have claimed more than 150 lives since.
