Condemning the arrest of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under stringent National Security Act (NSA), members of Karnataka Rajya Dalit Sangharsh Samiti accused the BJP-led Central government of trying to malign Mr. Wangchuk’s movement and being falsely held responsible for recent violence in Ladakh.
Samiti Sate convener Arjun Bhadre addressing press persons here on Friday said that detention of Mr. Wangchuk is an attack on democratic principles, the Central government misused NSA to suppress Ladakh residents advocating for their constitutional protections, economic security, and environmental preservation.
Mr. Bhadre said that the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance were demanding the Centre for separate statehood, constitutional protection under the Sixth Schedule, establishment of a public service commission and increase in parliamentary representation for Ladakh.
“Setting on fire an office and tearing the party flag [BJP] during the protest lead to charges of property damage and that cannot be considered as an anti-national act, the Modi-led government was targeting Mr. Wangchuk because he was leading a movement demanding the Centre to fulfill its promises,” Mr. Bhadre expressed.
Samiti demanded immediate release of Mr. Wangchuk and also urged government to order a high-level judicial investigation into the violence at Ladakh.
