Tamil Nadu Forest Minister R.V. Ranjith Kumar on Thursday inspected the Pulicat Bird Sanctuary and reviewed measures for its protection, habitat management and biodiversity conservation, an official release said.

The Minister travelled by boat and inspected the lake, islands, bird habitats and the bar mouth area, and directed officials to maintain the ecological health of the wetland by addressing issues related to water regime and salinity.

He also directed the scientific removal of Prosopis from the islands, strengthening of protection and monitoring arrangements, filling of staffing requirements and clear demarcation of sanctuary boundaries. Officials were asked to improve visitor amenities, cleanliness and coordination with the Fisheries department.

The Minister also interacted with local communities and directed officials to consider their requests and strengthen their participation in conservation. He reviewed the proposed eco-tourism and Eco-Development Committee initiative at Thonirevu, the release said.
