Two new garbage transfer stations set up in Kurnool

Two new garbage transfer stations have been set up in Kurnool to ease shifting of garbage collected from the city to the dump yard at Gargeyapuram.

The initiative will help the Kurnool Municipal Corporation (KMC) to effectively manage sanitation and achieve its goal of 100% door-to-door collection of garbage, said KMC Commissioner Challa Obulesu on Thursday. Mr. Obulesu said that the vehicles that collect garbage from households currently need to go all the way to Gargeyapuram dump yard. However, the vehicles can now transfer the garbage to bigger vehicles at the transfer stations that have been set up at the e-auto vehicle charging station and at Joharapuram road.

The Commissioner, who visited the garbage transfer stations, said that until now the vehicles had to go to the Gargeyapuram dump yard to dispose the garbage collected from households. This was a waste of time, as vehicles were taking a lot of time to return to the city and had less time to collect garbage from households. “To overcome this problem, the two transfer stations have been set up with special ramps to transfer garbage from smaller vehicles into bigger compactor vehicles. Three compactor vehicles will be used to shift garbage from the transfer stations to the dump yard,” the Commissioner said, adding the time taken by the smaller vehicles to dispose the garbage will get reduced.

He also urged the public to hand over the garbage from households to the vehicles and not to throw them indiscriminately on the streets as their cooperation would help to transform the city into a clean one.

Earlier in the day, he inspected the Vinayak ghat in the city and urged officials to make arrangements for the immersion of small clay Ganesh idols at the site.
