A city court has sentenced a 44-year-old man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh for possessing and selling opium in Bengaluru.
The accused, Bhagirath Dewasi, a resident of Devanahalli, was arrested by the Girinagar police on July 19, 2021, following a tip-off that a person was selling narcotic drugs behind the Indira Canteen at Banashankari 3rd Stage.
Acting on the information, a police team raided the spot and apprehended Dewasi. The police seized 2.04 kg of opium from his possession, along with a two-wheeler used in the offence.
The Girinagar police registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and arrested the accused, who was subsequently remanded in judicial custody.
The police investigated the case and filed a charge sheet before the court.
After the trial, the court convicted Dewasi and, on August 29, 2026, sentenced him to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹1 lakh.
