For anyone who has imagined swapping a regular office commute for a few months in Goa, the biggest question is usually how much it would actually cost. Ajay Sharma, who recently moved to the state for a few months while continuing his corporate job remotely, has shared a detailed look at his monthly budget.
In an Instagram video, Sharma listed his regular expenses, including rent, groceries, transport, fuel, gym membership and other day-to-day costs. Once everything is added up, he estimates that he spends around Rs 30,000 a month while living in Goa.
Rent, food and transport make up most of the budget
Sharma’s biggest monthly expense is accommodation. He stays in a three-bedroom house with a housemate and pays Rs 15,000 as his share of the rent. He has a private bedroom, while the kitchen and living room are shared.
Food is his next major expense. Based on an initial grocery bill of around Rs 1,500 a week, Sharma puts his monthly grocery spending at approximately Rs 6,000. He also points out that grocery prices in Goa are somewhat higher than what he was accustomed to in Delhi and Manali.
Getting around Goa accounts for another part of the budget. Sharma says having a scooter is practically essential for navigating the state. During the off-season, he managed to rent one for Rs 4,500 a month. Since he shares the scooter with his housemate, his portion comes to Rs 2,250.
Fuel costs him another Rs 1,200 or so each month.
Gym and miscellaneous expenses take the total to Rs 30,000
Fitness is another regular expense for Sharma. His membership at a local gym costs Rs 2,000 a month.
After accounting for rent, groceries, the scooter, fuel and gym membership, he sets aside around Rs 5,000 for miscellaneous spending. He estimates this at approximately Rs 1,200 a week.
His monthly spending therefore works out to roughly:
- Rent: Rs 15,000
- Groceries: Rs 6,000
- Scooter: Rs 2,250
- Fuel: Around Rs 1,2001
- Gym: Rs 2,000
- Miscellaneous expenses: Around Rs 5,000
Total: Approximately Rs 30,000 a month

Sharma’s calculation is, of course, based on his own routine and circumstances, including sharing accommodation and a scooter while keeping other expenses relatively controlled. Still, his breakdown offers a useful indication for remote workers considering a temporary move to Goa, showing that the lifestyle does not necessarily require a luxury-level budget.
