Kerala’s Minister for General Education V. Sivankutty has decried “attempts to politicise the issue of appointments in aided schools.”

Referring to protests by certain aided school managements, the Minister on Thursday (October 2, 2025) said the Kerala government “will not succumb to such pressures.”

He said the government was with the differently abled who should be rightfully getting appointments. There could be no compromises on the issue. Any challenges by school managements were unacceptable.

At the same time, the government was committed to protecting other appointments in aided schools, their entitlements, and students’ interests, the Minister said.

Mr. Sivankutty had earlier alleged that aided school managements were not reporting vacancies for differently abled appointments.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Minister had pointed out that appointments of teachers and non-teaching staff in aided schools were done by the managements. The government only approved the appointments. In case of any issue related to the appointments, the management should approach the court instead of blaming the government.

The government, he said, could act only within the legal framework. All aided school managements in the State were bound to function according to the Kerala Education Act, 1958, and the Kerala Education Rules, 1959. No violations could be allowed, he added.

Since the Kerala High Court and Supreme Court judgments in connection with differently abled appointments, the managements had not taken any action by approaching the court. Now, they were protesting in the last year of this Left Democratic Front government. These protests were politically motivated, the Minister said.

Calls for talks

He urged the managements to abandon the protests and resolve the issue through talks. The government, he said, was ready to hold discussions with all stakeholders on the issue, he had said in the statement.

The issue of aided school appointments had led to a heated debate in the Assembly too recently.
