Ramabai Ranveer, 47, a cook, mother, and native of Beed in the Marathawada region of Maharashtra, stood first at a running event in Ambajogai, Beed district, to help fund her daughters’ education, taking home the prize money of ₹3,000.

A video that has gone viral shows her running barefoot in a saree, holding her sandals in her hand, at the local event called “Amrut Daud marathon”.

The event was organised on August 29, 2026, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Bharatiya Shikshan Prasarak Sanstha, an educational institution in the Kholeshwar region. The run covered a distance of about 3 km from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk to Bhagyanagar Chowk in Ambajogai.

Ms. Ramabai Ranveer is the sole breadwinner of the family, and works as a domestic cook to support her two daughters. One of her daughters is pursuing a B.Sc. degree, the other is preparing for the police recruitment exam.

“I wanted to win; that is all I had on my mind. I will bring books and fulfil other needs of my children [with the prize money],” says Ramabai Ranveer. Photo: Special arrangement

“I run every day for my children’s future…today, I ran for myself and my children,” Ms. Ranveer told media persons.

Her daughter, Pooja Ranveer, encouraged her to participate in the event. “My mother came in first position, and I came second. I told my mother to run alongside me. I told her that even if she came second or third, it would be fine, but she should not get tired during the race. She never gives up, and that has helped,” Ms. Pooja Ranveer said, adding, “She is very fond of studies. My father died in an accident in Mumbai. My dream is to become a police officer, which is why I am studying here. Before this, I used to work in farming.”

“I wanted to win; that is all I had on my mind. I will bring books and fulfil other needs of my children [with the prize money],” Ms. Ramabai Ranveer said.
