In an effort to reduce the price of onions in the open market, they are to be sold via fair price shops in the State. The State government procured the onions utilising the price stabilisation fund, following instructions from the Chief Secretary at a review meeting.

The A-grade onions have been obtained by the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) under instructions from the Government of India.

A goods train carrying 850 tonnes of onions from Nashik arrived at the Korukkupet Railway Goods Shed on Monday. The onions will be sent to 21 districts in the State. Chennai and Tiruchi will each get 75 tonnes and Coimbatore 100 tonnes. NAFED sources said another rail load was expected shortly, and they were also being transported by road.

The Registrar of Cooperative Societies has instructed the Tamil Nadu Consumers’ Cooperative Federation to ensure that the consumers get the onions via fair price shops on time. The onions are likely to be sold at ₹35 per kg.

Meanwhile, the State government is also keeping an eye on sugar prices, sources said.
