Responding to concerns over plastic waste clogging city drains, as highlighted in a report on Sunday by The Hindu, the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) has stepped up its cleanup drive.

According to the GMC authorities on Monday, the city, which has a drainage network spanning more than 3,130 km, is undergoing cleaning to remove plastic waste, silt, and debris that are blocking water flow. Officials have identified nearly 100 spots where heavy plastic accumulation was reported and clearance is under way in the remaining stretches.

The GMC Commissioner, K. Mayur Ashok, said that despite a ban on single-use plastics, waste continues to accumulate in the drains. Plastic, particularly water bottles, which are not banned, have been accumulating in the drains. The Commissioner urged residents to cooperate with the GMC in keeping the drainage system clear to ensure the smooth flow of rainwater during the monsoon.
