Telangana is set to get a new world-class cricket stadium in the Future City, with the State government exploring a suitable 100-acre site for the ambitious project. The foundation stone is likely to be laid in December, according to sources.
The proposed stadium is being planned as a stadium-cum-multipurpose sporting and events space, with facilities modelled on iconic venues such as Lord’s in England and leading stadiums in Australia.
The initiative follows directions from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who has emphasised developing world-class sports infrastructure in the Future City. Officials are currently examining suitable locations in Bharat Future City for the proposed stadium.
With a planned seating capacity exceeding 1.32 lakh at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the proposed Hyderabad facility is expected to become the largest cricket stadium in the country. Its construction cost is also likely to surpass that of the Ahmedabad stadium.
The BCCI is expected to bear the construction and maintenance expenditure, while the State government will provide the required land. Officials are working on a framework for the project to be developed and managed jointly by the State government and the BCCI.
The proposed facility is not intended to be restricted to cricket. In line with the Chief Minister’s vision, it is being designed to accommodate other sporting events, including football, besides large-scale concerts and entertainment events. The stadium would have the flexibility to be reconfigured for different sporting and cultural events.
Officials are also examining the possibility of providing infrastructure capable of hosting major events on a scale larger than the existing convention facilities in Hyderabad. This could enable the venue to emerge as a major destination for international sporting events, concerts, exhibitions and other large gatherings.
The proposed stadium assumes significance as the existing Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium at Uppal has limitations in accommodating major international fixtures associated with global tournaments.
Its location in the Future City is expected to provide strong connectivity. The proximity to the Outer Ring Road, the proposed Regional Ring Road, the planned metro extension to the Future City and the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad would facilitate the movement of spectators and visitors.
The proposed project is part of the State government’s broader focus on developing sports infrastructure and promoting physical education. The Young India Physical Education and Sports University is already working with international universities and institutions, with the government seeking to create an ecosystem capable of nurturing sporting talent and hosting major international events.
