Food Safety officials inspected 34 canteens and kitchens functioning in government and private medical college hostels in Karnataka on August 27, issuing notices to five establishments for deficiencies found during the inspections.

In one canteen, the officials found violations related to labelling and seized 7 kg of expired rava and eight litres of expired milk stored in the kitchen.

In a statement by the Department of Food Safety and Drug Administration, legal action was being initiated against the food business operator concerned under the applicable provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act and rules.

The operator would be produced before the Additional Deputy Commissioner, who is the adjudicating authority, for further proceedings, he said.

The inspections form part of the department’s ongoing efforts to check food safety and hygiene in establishments serving food to students.
