Earlier in the morning, Tamil Nadu School Education and Information Minister Rajmohan said the State government was taking steps to rescue 103 Tamils, including Justice Sivagnanam, former judge of the Madras High Court, who had gone to Nepal.

Responding to a special calling attention motion in the Assembly, Mr. Rajmohan said 20 persons, who were part of a 57-member group from 10 districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry that had gone to Nepal as part of a tour organised by Kumbakonam-based Super Yatra, jointly with Nepal-based Samrat Tours and Travels, had been rescued. The pilgrims included 11 from Cuddalore, five from Krishnagiri, 16 from Thanjavur, one from Dharmapuri, four from Tiruchi, one from Tiruvannamalai, two from Tiruvarur, one from Namakkal, seven from Mayiladuthurai, six from Chennai, and three from Puducherry.

Mr. Rajmohan said the 20 Tamils, who were travelling in three vehicles, were caught in the floods. They left their belongings behind and reached an Armed Police camp safely. Steps were being taken to bring them to Kathmandu.

The Minister said the government was closely monitoring the situation and that there had been a delay in rescuing 34 pilgrims from Tamil Nadu. The State government had reached out to the Indian High Commission in Kathmandu.

Besides the 57 pilgrims, another 49 had gone to Nepal from Chennai, who are also yet to be rescued. The government had set up toll-free numbers, and received 937 calls.
