The discussion about Vande Mataram and the questions being raised about the song are unnecessary, Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said in Guledagudda in Bagalkot district on Sunday (August 16, 2026).

“I am clear about my stand. There should be no controversy about Vande Mataram. It inspired the freedom struggle. It was written before the National anthem. There is no problem for singing or celebrating that song,” said Mr. Kumaraswamy.

He said that there is a law about respecting Vande Mataram that everyone should follow.

He was speaking in reply to a query about the alleged disrespect for Vande Mataram song allegedly by members of Gandhi family.

“Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has clarified that she didn’t ask anyone to stop singing the Vande Mataram song in Delhi. She has claimed that she was only asking a staff member to provide a chair for AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge. Anyway, I think the discussion about the song and the questions being raised about it are all unnecessary“ he said.
